The Woodland League

Dedicated to restoring the relationship between people and their native woodlands

Get Involved

The Woodland League is a volunteer-led, non-profit organisation in Ireland dedicated to restoring native woodlands and reconnecting people—especially young people—with nature through education, community involvement, and cultural heritage.

Woodland League works to:

  • Protect and restore Ireland’s native trees and biodiversity

  • Promote community-based forestry

  • Provide nature education through hands-on projects like Forest in a Box

  • Advocate for sustainable forestry policies

  • Inspire reconnection with Irish woodland traditions

It draws inspiration from ancient Irish land wisdom, supporting the idea that thriving woodlands are vital for healthy communities, clean air and water, and climate resilience.

Our Projects

Forest in a box

Offers schools and communities a simple, low-maintenance way to grow native Irish trees from seed. The project combines hands-on learning with real environmental impact, helping to restore local woodlands and reconnect people with Ireland’s natural heritage.

Great Forest of Aughty

Reviving Ireland’s woodland heritage through local collaboration and ecological restoration

education

The Woodland League offers engaging forest walks, talks, and workshops that bring people closer to Ireland’s native woodlands.

Forest in a Box

Grow the Future, One Box at a Time

The box mimics the natural forest floor of leaf litter to start the trees off. The design encourages the trees to reach for the light and a fine mesh ensures protection of the seeds. Each one metre by one metre box can grow approximately 200 native trees for planting out every two years..

The Handbook for Agroforestry

The Handbook for Agroforestry is a practical guide produced by Andrew St. Ledger for CELT (Centre for Environmental Living and Training) in collaboration with The Woodland League. Tailored for Ireland’s unique landscape, this handbook offers accessible guidance on integrating trees with farming systems to enhance biodiversity, soil health, and sustainable land use.

Designed for farmers, educators, and community groups, the handbook provides step-by-step advice on planning, planting, and managing agroforestry systems. It emphasizes the use of native Irish tree species and traditional land knowledge, aligning with The Woodland League’s mission to reconnect people with their woodland heritage.

Whether you’re starting a small community project or exploring regenerative agriculture on a larger scale, this handbook serves as a valuable resource for combining ecological restoration with productive land use.

The Great Forest of Aughty

A Vision for the Forest of Aughty

Andrew St. Ledger has proposed a vision to restore the remnants of what was once the Great Forest of Aughty—a vast native oak woodland that once thrived across the region. We are now inviting support and collaboration from local communities, landowners, and groups across the Aughty area to explore the potential of bringing this native forest landscape back to life.
